Volunteers from everywhere help start the year with hopes for people still living in homes destroyed and damaged by Hurricane Wilma! All denominations and even those not connected to a Church pitched in to help.
The Lutheran's start off the month by helping us with one volunteer who has worked several days this month and some last month, we also hope to have him here next month. He worked on installing cabinets for us at a home in Clewiston. A group of 8 volunteers from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, MD worked hanging drywall at two homes in Clewiston. First United Methodist Church helped host this group by giving them a place to sleep. Local churches of various denominations helped to feed them while they were here as well. Lutheran Disaster Response has also helped fund us with grant money this month and has been incredibly supportive and informative as we have worked on building our group.
The Methodist's have done their part as well. 8 from Swain United Methodist Church in Tangier Island, VA with 1 tag along from Marcia,MD came. They hung drywall and worked toward finishing our rebuild. First United Methodist Church has helped with funding, sponsoring groups for NFL reimbursement, and providing meals to volunteers and providing Sunday School rooms for them to sleep in during their stay. Their pastor has also served as our Board Treasurer. UMCOR and the Florida Conference's Storm recovery Center have provided money for the case managers and construction coordinator's salary.
The Baptists descended on us next with 22 volunteers! These Virginia volunteers came from Mount Pleasant Church in Colonial Heights, Immanuel Baptist in South Beston, and First Baptist Church in Hopewell. These guys worked hard replaced damaged roofs until they got rained out and had to work on finishing drywall. First Baptist Church helped by putting this group up with a place to sleep and use of a kitchen. They also fed the group a few times during their stay, along with other local churches. A Baptist couple from Calhoun, KY also volunteered a couple of days as well working on finishing drywall. One of the long time members of the Baptist Church, and their Sunday School teacher is also our Vice President on our Board of Directors.
Our local Community Presbyterian Church provided us with 8 local volunteers who painted homes where new drywall had been installed. The church has also been helpful by providing us with donations to help meet expenses and make repairs. They have provided meals to several groups this month. Their Pastor serves as President of our Board of Directors. PDA also funds our volunteer coordinator. Presbyterian Churches from the coastal areas have assisted with funds to help pay our cell phone costs. We also had an individual Presbyterian volunteer from Georgia help out the group working on roofs.
Two volunteers from Orlando came and did an incredible job working for two weeks on installing and finishing drywall. They were fed by several local churches. These gals did an incredible job and showed just how hard us girls can work!
